Anyone got a medical condition?
Has anyone out there got trouble with their back, hips or knees?
Anyone got arthritis, rhuematism or osteoporosis?
Anyone got any genetic defects?
Any women ever gone “ouch” whilst giving birth?
Toothache?
Anyone believe that someone / something actually sat down and designed us to work this way?
I am, I have to say, in exceptionally good health. I am over 40 and have all but perfect vision without glasses; I can hear the same high frequency sounds that teenagers can hear. I rarely get colds and get over them quickly. I certainly have had no significant illnesses. I am also an atheist of the first order.
I make these points not, I hope, to appear smug – I am daily grateful for my my good fortune in my own good health and that of my family – but to indicate how arbitrary these things are. In a world overlooked by the kind of god some people seem to believe in, I should (despite what I think is a morally good lifestyle) be peppered with festering cankers. Any sickness among the pious, and my own health, indicates to me nothing more than the tragic irony of hoping that there is a god out there looking after us.
