Osteopenia in young Male?

I was struck down with Ulcerative Colitis in 2005, and it reverted from remission to flare-ups over about 2 years. I was on prednisolone for the flare-ups. I recently had a DEXA scan and I am now told I have osteopenia in my lower back. I’m 26. I guess the double hit to my bones was not only the steroids, but also the colitis itself and the mal-absorbtion of nutrients incl. calcium. I just started to take Adcal-D3, calcium and vitamin D supplements. Apparently bone is laid down up to early twenties or so. Am I doomed to osteoporosis later in life or is there still time to make up for the loss in bone density? The colitis is now under control and in remission.

Actually bone is always being taken up and laid down. Its a continuous process. You can do some things to both increase your calcium uptake and minimize your calcium loss, so its never totally hopeless. Your doctor will have to determine if the damage in your lower back will heal.

Good luck
