can osteoporosis affect men

By admin, 7 February, 2010, No Comment

Does osteoporosis affect men when they are middle aged?

Yes, men lose bone density as they age, just like women. There are two important differences that ‘help men’ have less of a problem – but they can still have a problem.

One: men tend to have larger bones and therefore ‘more bone’ to begin with than women (but if you are small boned like I am, you/I have increased risks).

Two: women go through a period of rapid bone loss after menopause, and obviously, men do not face this issue.

So, eat healthy foods. Get regular exercise. Don’t smoke or drink. And take a quality vitamin/mineral supplement to be sure you aren’t ’short’ on important nutrients. And, be sure to supplement with extra vitamin D because deficiency of Vitamin D has become a pandemic in the U.S. and it has significant consequences for bone density.

Best wishes and good luck!

Until recently considered an inevitable part of aging, osteoporosis is typically diagnosed only after a serious complication such as a fracture. It is now possible, however, to diagnose high-risk patients beforehand. Easily performed noninvasive tests estimate bone mass, and patients at risk can be treated with new drugs whose efficacy for fracture reduction has been proven in clinical trials. Osteoporosis: An Evidence-Based Guide to Prevention and Management, the newest volume in the acclaimed ACP Women’’s Health series, addresses every important facet of this common disease. The latest scientific evidence and the extensive clinical experience of the authors provide essential information on the origins and progress of osteoporosis. Treatment options are thoroughly reviewed.
